2026 Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Amphibians have been not at all new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.
A number of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.
If these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
