Brave Rail Employee Receives Critical Injuries Amid Mass Stabbing Incident on High-Speed Service
A brave train employee who stepped in to protect travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a high-speed train has sustained critical injuries, authorities stated on Sunday.
Details of the Terrifying Event
Surveillance footage allegedly depicts the employee trying to stop the assailant as the train traveled between a city and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Reaction and Consequences
The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five individuals have now been released from medical care.
A bystander filmed the individual waving a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced police on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "End my life, kill me."
“This terrible incident has affected many people. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the courageous employee of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by specialist personnel,” stated a senior law enforcement officer.
Labor Reaction and Appeals for Action
Train unions were swift to commend employees and demand more action. A labor official stated he would be “requesting urgent discussions with government, train companies and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the best possible assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.
Another association representative urged the rail company and government “to act swiftly to review safety, to support the impacted workers, and to ensure nothing like this occurs again”.
Driver Commended for Quick Thinking
The operator who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“The driver did not halt the service in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the first responders to reach, but he continued going until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” stated a association representative.
Additional Details
Authorities said they received the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness described at first wondering if the event was a holiday joke, but quickly understood from people's faces that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is nothing to suggest the incident was a terror-related attack and have requested the public to come forward with any further information.
Train services on the affected route are anticipated to have delays until Monday, with passengers recommended to defer their journeys where possible.
Anyone with details that could assist the inquiry are encouraged to contact authorities by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
