The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
