Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI Images of Maduro.

AI-generated images purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained following his capture by the United States have amassed tens of millions of impressions across the internet.

How AI Images of Maduro Appeared Rapidly

The first fake AI image seemingly showing him taken off a plane emerged shortly after. This image was unpublished by any authoritative US channels; it was instead posted on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved Google’s SynthID, which found the image was produced or modified with Google AI.

Additional AI-generated pictures began to spread in the following hours, seemingly depicting more angles of Maduro detained. Noticeable logos on the graphics indicate they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

AI analysis confirms the further pictures were similarly produced using AI technology.

Real Photo Released but Fabrications Persisted

Donald Trump released the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. But even after this real photo was published, AI-generated images persisted online but were modified to incorporate the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.

Reverse image searches reveal these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art account. Once again, analysis found the new graphics were produced with AI tools.

Key Points:

  • Synthetic media gained traction following the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The first fake image appeared within hours on platform X.
  • Detection software like Google’s SynthID helped to verify the pictures as synthetic.
  • Fake images persisted to spread and be updated even after the publication of authentic photographs.
  • The origin of many fabricated images was traced to social media profiles dedicated to graphic design.
