‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Light-based treatment is clearly enjoying a surge in popularity. You can now buy glowing gadgets designed to address skin conditions and wrinkles to muscle pain and oral inflammation, the newest innovation is a toothbrush enhanced with tiny red LEDs, described by its makers as “a major advance in at-home oral care.” Worldwide, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. There are even infrared saunas available, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. As claimed by enthusiasts, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, enhancing collagen production, soothing sore muscles, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health.
The Science and Skepticism
“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” notes Paul Chazot, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Of course, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, as well, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Artificial sun lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to combat seasonal emotional slumps. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.
Types of Light Therapy
Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. During advanced medical investigations, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, spanning from low-energy radio waves to short-wavelength gamma rays. Therapeutic light application employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).
UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It modulates intracellular immune mechanisms, “and dampens down inflammation,” explains a dermatology expert. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (typically emitting red, infrared or blue wavelengths) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”
Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance
Potential UVB consequences, such as burning or tanning, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which minimises the risks. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, meaning intensity is regulated,” says Ho. Most importantly, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where it’s a bit unregulated, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”
Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty
Red and blue LEDs, he says, “aren’t typically employed clinically, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, improve circulatory function, oxygen utilization and dermal rejuvenation, and activate collagen formation – a primary objective in youth preservation. “The evidence is there,” says Ho. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. There are lots of questions.”
Treatment Areas and Specialist Views
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, a microbe associated with acne. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – although, notes the dermatologist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, though when purchasing home devices, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. If it’s not medically certified, standards are somewhat unclear.”
Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes
Meanwhile, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he states. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.
Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, however two decades past, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he recalls. “I was quite suspicious. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, which most thought had no biological effect.”
What it did have going for it, however, was its efficient water penetration, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health
More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. These organelles generate cellular energy, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, even within brain tissue,” explains the neuroscientist, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is consistently beneficial.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In low doses this substance, notes the scientist, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: oxidative protection, swelling control, and waste removal – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
