JP Morgan Requires Biometric Data for Headquarters Access
The banking leader has notified employees moving into its recently built corporate base in NYC that they are required to submit their biological identifiers to gain entry the multi-billion structure.
Move from Discretionary to Compulsory
The financial firm had originally planned for the enrollment of employee biometrics at its Manhattan high-rise to be discretionary.
Nevertheless, workers of the US's largest bank who have commenced employment at the corporate hub since last month have been sent emails stating that biometric access was now "required".
Understanding the Biometric System
The new entry system requires staff to submit their hand geometry to enter security gates in the lobby instead of using their access passes.
Headquarters Details
The bank's headquarters, which apparently cost $3bn to construct, will ultimately act as a workplace for ten thousand employees once it is entirely staffed before year-end.
Protection Reasoning
JP Morgan declined to comment but it is understood that the employment of physical identifiers for access is intended to make the premises more secure.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exemptions for specific personnel who will retain the ability to use a badge for access, although the standards for who will utilize more standard badge entry remains unspecified.
Additional Technological Features
In addition to the introduction of physical identifier systems, the bank has also released the "JPMC Work" digital platform, which acts as a virtual ID and center for worker amenities.
The app enables employees to handle guest registration, use building layouts of the building and schedule food from the facility's nineteen food service providers.
Security Context
The introduction of stricter access protocols comes as US corporations, especially those with significant operations in New York, look to strengthen protection following the shooting of the CEO of one of the biggest American insurance companies in recent months.
The CEO, the leader of the healthcare company, was fatally shot not far from the bank's location.
Potential Wider Implementation
It is not known if JP Morgan aims to deploy biometric access for personnel at its branches in other key banking hubs, such as the British financial district.
Corporate Surveillance Context
The decision comes during discussion over the employment of technology to monitor employees by their employers, including tracking physical presence metrics.
Previously, all staff members on mixed remote-office plans were directed they have to report to the physical location full-time.
Leadership Viewpoint
The bank's chief executive, Jamie Dimon, has described JP Morgan's new tower as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.
The banker, one of the influential banking figures, this week alerted that the likelihood of the US stock market experiencing a decline was much more substantial than many investors thought.
