Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Squad Against India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, as in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a surprise inclusion.
Recent Form Lead to Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the ODI side following scoring just one run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes
Recent performances suggest of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia look for a fix to their top-order woes.
Pace Returns and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
