The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World
The seasonal game drop for Minecraft has arrived — and it brings with it the initial fresh armament introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is now available and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mounts of Mayhem drop also incorporates several new features and enhancements focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," stated a lead developer. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your allies on horseback, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an attack ideally crafted for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a major use cases for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer continues. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and get more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for knightly combat."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the elytra and going out and making some real mayhem," she teases.
In other words: Aerial lance combat is now real, and it deserves to be an competitive event right away.
Another major addition in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is modeled after the seashells found in-game for years, can be tamed and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no necessity to come up for air for a breath.
The other inclusions are largely things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a zombie Nautilus spawning in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've long considered this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for sea mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also notes that there are actually two distinct kinds of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you end up in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a similar exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some long-overdue tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse bodies of water while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the year-end release of the year is a solid offering. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and new threats seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
