Three image specialists based in the island nation have recorded images of “red sprites”, among the most elusive light phenomena globally, where luminous crimson flashes appear in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

This group of artists initially planned to photograph the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the southern region of the country on 11 October, before encountering the unusual spectacle.

Initially believing they would be fortunate to get good weather that night, but their expedition transformed into “a night to remember,” an individual involved commented.

Upon examining his photographs for a galaxy composite and discovered he had recorded red sprites,” the photographer noted. “It was unbelievable – we experienced excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the dark.”

Understanding Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are bursts of electrical energy in the higher atmospheric layers, caused by electrical storms.
